Alycia Carlson- Director

Founder and director of Joyful Motion, Miss Alycia has been dancing for more than 30 years and has been teaching for more than 20. She has studied all over the East Coast training in the areas of Classical Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Character and many other dance froms. She also has attended many teaching seminars and workshops to enhance her knowledge of dance and dance instruction. During her career she has taught for private studios, schools, daycare centers, camps, theatre groups and recreation centers.  Miss Alycia is also director of the JMDT; our competitive team which has done consistently well in regional competitions since it’s inception in 2001.  When not in the studio Miss Alycia runs Joyful Motion from her home office and enjoys being the mother of two very active boys!

 

Jenae’ Manns - Instructor

 

Congratulations to Miss Jenae' For Being Casted As A Dancer In The Movie Step Up 2 !!!  We Are Proud Of You!

Miss Jenae been dancing and loving it since she was a little girl. She has studied Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Hip Hop and many other dance forms. As a student she was a two time recipient of the Maryland Dance Council Teachers Choice Award. It is appearant to all that Miss Jenae's first love is dance and she thrills in sharing the art of with with our youth.  Miss Jenae holds a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Education and enjoys working as a home based therapist with Autistic children in addition to teaching dance here at Joyful Motion.

 
Nicole McGurl - Instructor

Miss Nicole has danced her whole life and taken classes in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, African, Irish, Swing, and Ballroom dance. She started dancing at a private studio and from there she danced with her high school's dance company. Once in college she began performing with Aurora, a multi-cultural dance company based at Howard Community College. Nicole has been on the Joyful Motion staff for seven years. During the day Miss Nicole works in Montgomery County as an Elementary School teacher. She is also the proud mommy of a baby girl who just turned one! Congratulations Miss Nicole!

 

Heather Dixon- Instructor

Miss Heather has been studying dance with Joyful Motion since 1990. Growing up in our program and experiencing it first hand, she has the benefit of being very familiar with our curriculum. Miss Heather was a wonderful asset to our student assistant program for five years. Now, after working as a substitute for two years and completing a year of teacher training, Miss Heather is a welcome addition to our staff! Miss Heather continues to pursue her dance education by taking classes here at Joyful Motion as well as at H.C.C.

 

Maisha Wilhite - Instructor

Miss Maisha has trained for many years in the dance field as a student and competitor. While obtaining her degree in Electrical Engineering she also completed a Concentration in Dance taking courses in many forms of dance. She is currently a member and assistant choreographer for the Salsa Fuego Dance Company. Recently she won first place in the DC Open Dance Championships for solo couples in the amateur salsa division. She is happy to be sharing her love of dance with our students and is looking foward to her second year on staff!

Leah Colendres - Instructor

Miss Leah grew up dancing with Joyful Motion and is a former member of the JMDT. She was also a member of our student assistant program for many years to the delight of the children who she worked with. She joined our staff this past spring and worked closely with one of our Sr. staff members during her teacher training period before taking over the Saturday classes at LCC this summer. Miss Leah brings joy and enthusiasm to her classes that is contagious. In addition to dancing, Miss Leah is working towards a degree in nursing and enjoying being a mom to her little boy, who is fastly becoming an busy toddler!

 

Jessica Hopkins - Instructor

Miss Jessica is a student teacher who has worked in our assistant program for many years. Her ability and enthusiasm as an assistant made her the natural choice to take the lead for our Saturday DRCC classes in 2005. As a student teacher she continues to also work as an assistant where she recieves further training. Miss Jessica is a member of the JMDT and as a soloist at the KAR competition in 2005 she recieved the honor of being invited to participate in an elite group of dancers known as the Kar Kids. Jessica's students are very lucky to have her and she serves as a role model for our younger dancers.
